There’s something undeniably special about a fall wedding. The crisp air, rich colors, and that unmistakable feeling of warmth that comes with the season. Especially here in Upstate New York, where autumn is arguably one of the most beautiful times of year to get married. But when it comes to planning a fall wedding, there’s a common misconception that embracing the season means embracing every traditional fall wedding trend along with it.
Burnt orange, burgundy, pumpkins, sunflowers, and autumn leaves. While these elements can certainly be beautiful, they’re far from the only way to celebrate the season. Some of the most beautiful autumn weddings take inspiration from the season in much more subtle, unexpected ways. To put it simply: Your fall wedding doesn’t have to look like fall. It can simply feel like fall. And if you’re planning an autumn celebration, here are a few of our favorite ways to embrace the season without the clichés.
Rethink the Traditional Fall Wedding Color Palette
When we think of traditional fall wedding colors, we immediately think: burnt orange, burgundy, mustard yellow, and deep red. And while there’s absolutely nothing wrong with these colors, we love encouraging our couples to think beyond the expected. Fall is all about richness, depth, and those cozy, inviting tones we naturally gravitate toward as the seasons change. And none of that requires sticking to a traditional autumn palette.

Chocolate brown, espresso, warm taupe, muted greens, and soft ivory have entered the chat. These colors feel elevated and seasonal while offering a more understated approach to fall wedding design. We’re particularly loving the idea of incorporating rich brown tones into autumn weddings. Chocolate-colored linens, espresso bridesmaid dresses, neutral florals, or even subtle brown accents throughout your stationery can create an incredibly delish design.
Ultimately, you don’t need orange and red to make your wedding feel like fall. It’s about creating a color palette that complements the season without letting it dictate your entire design.
Fall Wedding Flowers Don’t Have to Mean Sunflowers

Just because you’re getting married in September, October, or November doesn’t mean your floral arrangements need to include sunflowers, wheat stalks, or an abundance of autumn leaves. There are so many beautiful ways to incorporate seasonal inspiration into your wedding florals without leaning into an overly traditional autumn aesthetic (IF THAT’S WHAT YOU’RE GOING FOR OF COURSE, DO WHATEVER YOU WANT.)
For a more modern, sculptural look, we love calla lilies. Their clean lines and dramatic shapes can make an incredible statement. Dahlias, cosmos, and anthuriums are other beautiful options to explore with your floral designer depending on availability and the direction of your wedding design. Imagine a tablescape featuring deep burgundy calla lilies, warm candlelight, and rich chocolate linens. It feels undeniably appropriate for fall, yet there’s nothing overtly autumn-themed about it.
Our advice is to let the season inspire your floral design rather than dictate it. Work with your florist to explore what’s available and most importantly, what feels authentic to your personal style.
Embrace Texture Instead of Traditional Fall Wedding Decor

One of the easiest ways to make a fall wedding feel cozy and inviting is through texture, which has been a BIG theme throughout the 2026 wedding season. From linens and stationery to furniture and decor, incorporating different materials can add so much depth and dimension to your overall design without relying on traditional fall decorations. Like, hello? Velvet chairs? Leather place cards? We’re ALL in.
Even something as simple as swapping a lightweight summer linen for a heavier, more textured fabric can completely transform a tablescape. We also love incorporating these details in smaller, unexpected ways, whether it’s velvet ribbons, handmade paper, or beautifully textured dinnerware. Individually, they may seem subtle, but together they create a layered, intentional design that feels especially fitting for fall.
The point? You don’t need pumpkins and autumn leaves to embrace the season. Sometimes, it’s the less obvious details that make the biggest impact.
Let the Fall Landscape Speak for Itself
One of the greatest advantages of planning a fall wedding in Upstate New York or the Hudson Valley is the landscape. From the Adirondack Mountains to the rolling hills of the Hudson Valley, autumn brings some of the most incredible natural scenery to our region. And when you’re getting married somewhere surrounded by beautiful fall foliage, sometimes the best design decision is knowing when to let the setting speak for itself.

If your ceremony overlooks mountains covered in changing leaves, do you really need to incorporate those same colors into every floral arrangement and design detail? Not necessarily. In fact, we often love the contrast of a more restrained wedding design against a vibrant autumn landscape. Imagine an outdoor ceremony framed by brilliant fall foliage, with simple ivory florals and understated seating. The setting provides the seasonal atmosphere, while the design complements it rather than competing with it.
This is one of the reasons we love planning fall weddings in the Hudson Valley and Upstate New York. The natural beauty of the region offers so much inspiration, and no two properties or celebrations ever feel quite the same. Take your venue and surroundings into consideration before finalizing your wedding design. Sometimes, nature has already done much of the decorating for you.
Create Warmth Through Lighting, Not Decorations

If there’s one design element we think deserves a little more attention when planning a fall wedding, it’s lighting. With the sun setting earlier and the evenings getting longer, fall presents the perfect opportunity to really lean into candlelight and ambient lighting. And trust us, the right lighting can completely transform a space.
Think long reception tables lined with taper candles, softly illuminated floral arrangements, and a room that practically glows as guests sit down for dinner. We’re big believers that candlelight can make even the grandest venues feel intimate, romantic, and inviting. And the best part? You don’t need an abundance of seasonal decor to achieve that cozy autumn atmosphere.
A thoughtfully lit reception can make just as much of a statement as an elaborate floral installation, and sometimes, it’s the detail that brings the entire design together.
Incorporate Seasonal Details Through Food and Drink
Not every seasonal element needs to be visual, and as self-proclaimed foodies, this might just be our favorite part. Fall brings some of the BEST flavors to the table, and your wedding menu is the perfect opportunity to embrace them. Seasonal ingredients, locally sourced produce, signature cocktails featuring apple or pear, and desserts inspired by your favorite autumn flavors…what more could one want?!
Here in the Hudson Valley and Upstate New York, we’re especially lucky to have incredible local farms, orchards, and culinary talent that are such an important part of our region’s identity. And what better way to celebrate that than by incorporating a little local flavor into your wedding menu?
Work with your catering team to create a menu that celebrates the season while still incorporating the foods you genuinely love. It’s an opportunity to highlight the incredible flavors of fall, bring a little personality to your celebration, and create an experience your guests will remember long after the last course.
